A much postponed meeting between the Jeffreys Bay Residents Association (JBRA) committee and the senior management of the Kouga Municipality (KM) was held recently.
The acting municipal manager, Mr Fadi, addressed each of the issues on the lengthy agenda with a refreshing honesty and directness.
Fadi conceded that the KM was in dire financial straits, owing many people and organisations lots of money. He said that the present council had inherited a much worse situation than had been portrayed by the previous incumbents.
The KM has commissioned an investigation by auditors KPMG into past irregular financial practices. This report, due to be released soon, will form the basis of actions against staff suspected of financial wrong doing. The KM was determined to make a full recovery of all mismanaged funds.
The JBRA pointed out that the solution to the KM financial crisis is straight forward: cut expenditure ruthlessly, increase income through better debt collection, enhance staff efficiency, and improve management of the municipality.
