Let's unite around clean energy

AS our government reconfirms its intention to roll out six new nuclear reactors,  Switzerland this week became the latest of half a dozen nations that have since Fukushima declared their intention to phase out this controversial form of energy generation.

The Swiss government predicts that doing this will help businesses involved in green technology, add jobs and help hold down rising electricity prices.

Across in Japan, with the full extent of the radiation leak from the March tsunami and melt-down at the Fukushima nuclear power plant still being assessed, and the latest in a summer of unusually powerful storms battering the coast, 60000 anti-nuke protesters have marched in Tokyo.

Following on the German government’s announcement earlier this year that it will phase out nuclear power by 2022,  the German industrial conglomerate, Siemens, has said it will not longer be investing in any further nuclear projects.
